The budding engineers of Rayat & Bahra Institute of Engineering and Bio-Technology, Sahauran, Punjab, have designed and fabricated an off-road vehicle and are all set to compete on an international event "Baja SAE Race Event". In this event, students team is required to design and manufacture an off-road Baja vehicle (also called as, All-Terrain Vehicle) which can run on any surface or terrain. The Rayat & Bahra Group Chairman S. Gurvinder Singh Bahra unveiled the vehicle at Mohali Campus on Wednesday. This competition is organized by Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) at the grounds of University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), El Paso, Texas, U.S.A. A team of 10 students from ME, CSE/IT, ECE branch and 02 faculty advisors from the college is participating in this competition. A total of 100 teams are participating from all around the world. This year, 7 teams from India are participating in the Baja SAE Race Event to be held in U.S.A from 24 - 27 April, 2014 said by Campus Director, Mohali Campus, Dr. K. C. Aggarwal. The Director-Principal Prof. V. Rihani introduced the team as team captain Abhinav Sharma, with other team members are Aakaash Bose, Ankit Girdher, Paras Bhardwaj, Navdeep Dimri, Gurbir Singh Benipal, Kartik Dogra, Abhishek Choudhary, Parminder Singh and Hitesh Sharma. Dr. Jujhar Singh and Er. Ashwani Kumar are the faculty advisors for the competition. The team captain, Abhinav Sharma said that his team wants to represents the institute as well as the country as a whole in this competition and his team is very sure of positive results. The total cost of project is Rs 35 lakhs and these funds are managed through the Rayat & Bahra Group, students and sponsorships from the various industrial groups. The faculty advisors Dr. Jujhar Singh and Er. Ashwani Kumar explained the vehicle specifications. The total weight of vehicle is 235 Kg, powered by a 10 BHP, 305 CC, Intek Model engine which is donated by Briggs & Stratton Corporation, USA. The frame of the vehicle has been made using AISI 1018 tubular steel pipes. The vehicle has hydraulic disc brakes and independent suspension, also all safety features have been taken into account. The vehicle is designed on the CATIA Software and the analysis work is done on "ANSYS software". It took almost 01 year to develop this car. The students of Rayat & Bahra group had already participated in three international competitions. In April 2012, the institute had already designed the "MOONBUGGY" and participated in "NASA Great Moon Buggy Race" at Alabama, USA. In June, 2009, the students of Rayat - Bahra group designed and fabricated a Formula Car which participated at California, USA. In June 2008, the students of Rayat - Bahra group fabricated a Super Mileage Car, which participated at Michigan, USA.
